Reading Grades 4-12 introduces a research-based framework for teaching reading comprehension in grades 4-12 across content areas. Participants learn about their own use of the seven key comprehension strategies as readers. They become aware of and experience the teaching of these strategies in the context of a compelling topic. Facilitators model the reader’s workshop, a generative structure for explicitly teaching comprehension strategies across the disciplines. Participants will practice teaching their own mini-lessons, and will design a reader’s workshop lesson they plan to teach back at school. The institute also focuses on assessing reading skills and on creating a classroom culture of literacy.
