Our schools consistently outperform their peers on student achievement measures and we are committed to collecting third-party research on the impact of our work.
A recent study by Mathematica Policy Research finds that our middle school students gain an extra 10 months of learning growth in math and 7 months of extra learning growth in reading after three years.
Mathematica matched students from five urban middle schools founded in partnership with EL in Washington, DC, and New York City to a comparison group of students with similar demographic characteristics and baseline achievement in the two years before students entered EL schools. Mathematica's rigorous research methods ensured that student performance outcomes were the result of the EL model and not variations in student characteristics or student achievement trends from prior years.
Based on the impact estimates, the five EL schools increase reading and math significantly on average:
In reading, EL students experience positive impacts that are approximately equal in magnitude to an extra five months of learning growth after two years (.11 standard deviations) or an extra seven months of learning growth after three years (.16 standard deviations).
In math, EL students experience positive impacts equal to about an extra three months of learning growth after two years (.09 standard deviations) or 10 months of extra learning growth after three years (.29 standard deviations).
Impact in our Network
Schools in the Expeditionary Learning network that implement our model with fidelity exceed their peers on standardized assessments.
*The EL Implementation Review (IR) is a standardized measure of implementation across 26 key practices of the EL Design that is conducted annually.
Our 100% Club
Our goal for each student is college acceptance. In our exemplary high schools, 100% college acceptance is the standard.
