Expeditionary Learning’s Steven Levy Wins the Brooks Thomas Exemplary Service Award
Nationally Recognized School Reformer Wins Award for Exemplary Service
NEW YORK, Dec. 13 - Expeditionary Learning, the educational reform organization, is pleased to announce Steven Levy as the recipient of the 2011 Brooks Thomas Exemplary Service award. Levy is recognized for the leadership, commitment, and joy he brings to his work as an EL school designer.
The Brooks Thomas award was established in 2010 by the EL Board of Directors to honor staff excellence. The award is named in honor of Brooks’ commitment to education and deep belief in Kurt Hahn’s vision for experiential education. As a member of the first EL Board of Trustees, Brooks made significant contributions to EL’s growth and success.
Steven Levy is a School Designer in the Northeast Region of EL’s network and works with teachers to design curriculum and improve instructional practice. He also conducts workshops in project-based learning throughout the country. He has taught every grade level from kindergarten through college and was 1992-93 Massachusetts Teacher of the Year and the Disney National Outstanding General Elementary Teacher in 1994-95.
Steven Levy was nominated by his peers at EL as an employee who best exemplified the qualities of excellence, collaboration, and perseverance. Scott Hartl, President and CEO of EL, notes, “for many, Steven Levy is the inspiration behind Expeditionary Learning and the reason to get involved with EL. When EL staff and educators think of Steven, they see him sitting quietly and listening intently. They see him musing deeply, formulating probing questions because he is genuinely curious. And, they see him looking intently at each person with whom he speaks, giving the smile that exudes joy in life and learning and invites connection.”

My children attend Genesee Community Charter School in Rochester, NY and are therefore direct recipients of the hard work & creativity of Steven Levy. I can attest to the results of his work. Congratulations!
My son went to the Genesee Community Charter School in Rochester, NY and as a Senior in high school he continues to use the skills and knowledge acquired while in their EL program. Congratualtions. He had an awesome educational experience at the GCCS.
